What is a shipyard?
It is a large facility where ships are built and repaired. It comes from the Arabic word «dar-us sınaa» (house of art). It has also been translated into Western languages as "arsenal".The Turks established their first shipyard in Alanya during the Seljuk period. Later, the Arabs also advanced in shipbuilding. Westerners later developed the technique and turned shipbuilding into an industry. The first facilities that come to mind in shipyards are inclined slipway structures, dry or floating docks, large cranes with tons of lifting capacity, presses, guillotines, machine tools, welding machines and qualified technical personnel.Logistics facilities that ensure material flow also play important roles in shipyards to ensure that ship construction and maintenance works are carried out without interruption. In today's shipyards, there is also a drawing room that draws the plans of the ships to be built after designing them, and a planning department that describes the order of work and the way it is built.Although shipyards were established mostly for military purposes, they continued their activities for the construction of ships and also dealt with the repair of the systems of damaged ships.
